Breakout Session Information

Breakout session topics include:

  • Resilience: Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) refers to abuse, neglect, or household dysfunctions experienced as a child, experiences which can have long-term social, career, and health impacts. Students coping with ACEs often experience anxiety and depression that mask themselves in the classroom as behavioral issues, lack of motivation, or even as earning impairments. In this session, we will explore the inspiring research on resilience to gain a deeper understanding of how small changes in classroom practices can help all students overcome challenges and [succeed/excel] in school and in life, especially those coping with ACEs.
  • Equity/Empowered Expectations: 50 years of research on teacher expectations has repeatedly found significant impacts on students’ academic performance and overall life outcomes. While knowledge around this subject has accumulated in the academic world, there is a general lack of understanding among those working in the front lines of education, i.e., How are our expectations of students formed? How do they actually play out in a student’s life? And what can be done? In this session, we explore the science behind our expectations of others and how we can become aware of limiting beliefs and take action to improve the associated behaviors
  • Staying the Course: When Staff and Administration Change The culture of a school is its foundation, but what happens when there are major changes? We will walk you through the changes we have experienced, and how we have turned them into a positive force.
  • 7 Habit Trainers: Students Lead Monthly Habit Lessons Student lighthouse members have created a mission around ensuring all students know and understand the habits. They work toward fulfilling their mission by leading monthly lessons within the classroom
  • Creating a Leadership Lifestyle How to bring the components of student leadership to life from a Lighthouse School perspective.Provide ideas and materials to take back with you so that you can begin developing Active Teams.
